A side swipe speed test measures how fast you can swipe your finger sideways across your phone or tablet screen. You perform 10 alternating left and right swipes, and the tool calculates the velocity of each one — the distance your finger travels divided by the time it takes, measured in pixels per second (px/s).
Unlike tap speed tests that measure how many inputs you can make per second, side swipe speed is about the raw velocity of a single continuous motion. It tests a completely different aspect of your touchscreen dexterity.
Swipe velocity depends heavily on screen size, finger length, and how much of the screen you cover. Here's a rough guide:

The average mobile user swipes at around 1,500–3,000 px/s. If you're consistently above 4,000 px/s, you're faster than most people.
Screen size matters. Larger screens give your finger more room to travel, which can increase the distance component of velocity. A tablet user may clock higher px/s than a phone user simply because of the longer swipe path.
Finger moisture and grip. Dry fingers glide faster across glass. If your screen is greasy or your fingers are damp, friction increases and speed drops.
Screen protectors. Matte screen protectors add friction and can noticeably reduce side swipe speed compared to bare glass or glossy protectors.
Touch sample rate. Higher-end phones sample touch input at 240Hz or more, capturing faster movements more accurately. Budget phones at 60Hz may not register the full speed of a very fast swipe.
Horizontal swiping is the core movement input in a huge slice of mobile gaming. Endless runners — Subway Surfers, Temple Run and their hundred descendants — are decided by how fast you can chain lane changes, and a slow side swipe is the difference between the coin line and the train. Shooters like PUBG Mobile and COD Mobile use horizontal drag for camera control: turning to face a flank is literally a side swipe, and players who swipe faster turn faster. Rhythm games add swipe notes on top of taps, and even card games like Clash Royale reward quick horizontal drags when you're cycling cards under pressure.
Alternating direction — the specific thing this test measures — is what separates game-ready swiping from casual scrolling. Anyone can flick fast once; recovering and swiping back the other way without a pause is the skill.
For repeated alternating swipes, a light fingertip stroke beats a full thumb drag — less contact area means less friction and a faster reset. Keep the motion in your fingers, not your wrist: wrist movement adds travel time and throws off your rhythm on the direction change. Two-handed players can rest the phone on a surface and alternate index fingers, which is the swipe equivalent of the two-thumb technique.
Swipes under 100 pixels are rejected — you'll see a "SWIPE HARDER" prompt. This prevents accidental taps from counting as swipes.
This test requires touch input. If you're on a desktop, try the CPS test or other mouse-based tests instead.
The swipe down test measures repeated swipes in one direction, which favours raw flick speed. This test forces you to alternate left and right, so it also measures how quickly you recover and reverse — a rhythm skill as much as a speed skill.
Px/s is swipe velocity: how far your finger travelled divided by how long the swipe took. It's the same unit games use internally for gesture detection. Because screen resolution affects it, compare your scores against your own history and the leaderboard rather than treating any single number as absolute.
